We Are Friends of Dorothy
Friends of Dorothy refers to the repression suffered by homosexuals in the United States. This term was used to identify another person of the same sexual condition, when it was illegal in the United States. The phrase is said to date back to World War II.
The origin of the euphemism is not precisely known, but there are several theories that attribute the term to Judy Garland, actress who played Dorothy in the famous movie 'The Wizard of Oz'. There are small hints that link the actress to the sympathy she felt for the collective.
We Are Friends of Dorothy (WAFOD)
LGBTQIA+ students frequently experience negative school climates; specifically, they suffer from bullying as a result of prejudice and discrimination based on their Gender Identities and/or Gender-Affective Orientations. These negative climates can threaten their health and well-being.
Against this backdrop, scientific research has consistently suggested that there are four strategies to help LGBTQIA+ students and all students feel safe and supported in school:

-
Inclusive and enumerative policies
-
Professional training on LGBTQIA+ related issues
-
Resources on LGBTQIA+ related issues
-
Gender Student Leadership Clubs or Alliances
WAFOD is an effective strategy for creating safe and protective schools involves generating resources with content of interest to LGBTQIA+ college students (such as information and support services), as well as inclusive curricula available to all students.
WAFOD's support strategy is developed to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people and LGBTQIA+ history become a resource for college students and their allies. Ensuring that they have personal and technological resources and safe zones to express themselves and communicate, as well as promoting visibility and inclusion through the services offered on our website.
